Good writing skills are alone insufficient when it comes to handling an interview. The following tips might help the amateur journalist to get over some of their inhibitions and face the interview demon with more confidence.
Don't shy away from Research:
Whether your interviewee is a famous celeb or the secretary of the local Rotary club, it's advisable to do a complete background check on him. Google out all the information you can get or talk to associates. Make sure you know all you need to know about your interviewee and more.
Be Prepared:
Following the girl's scouts' motto will go a long way in conducting a successful interview. Prepare a list of all the questions you wish to ask your interviewee. If you really know your subject, then you should be able to anticipate some of the answers and be able to base some of your questions on that response. This will make your questioning seem spontaneous and will also impress your interviewee.
Connect with the interviewee:
Some people prefer quick, crisp and a professional interview while others might prefer a more laid back style. Judge the attitude preference of your interviewee early on itself and conduct your interview accordingly.
Leave your nerves at home:
This may be the first interview you have ever conducted, but try not to show the butterflies in your stomach. The interviewee is probably just as anxious and wouldn't want you to have the jitters too. Be calm and composed. Only with a clear mind can you think straight and put the interviewee at ease too. Make sure you tick off the questions you have already asked during the interview or in your nervousness you might repeat them.
Do an Audio Recording:
Writing down every word said in an interview is not easy. Many times you might miss some important point said by the interviewee while you are writing down his previous comment. While there is nothing wrong with asking him to repeat himself or making him wait while you finish noting down points, it is better to avoid it. You may tend to lose the thread of where you want to lead the interviewee and miss out on the spontaneity. Also it's always best to make eye contact than scribbling in your notebook while the subject is speaking. Best option is to invest in a good quality audio recorder. Test the recorder before hand and learn all its functions. Click here to know more about popular audio recording devices.
You can then have a relaxed tête-à-tête and let the recorder do its work. We can transcribe your audio at very economic and cost efficient prices. Click here to know more about Journalistic Interview Transcriptions.
Keep the courtesies:
Once the interview is published, make sure you send your interviewee a copy of the magazine or newspaper with a thank you note. Even if he is a bigwig, he shouldn't have to buy the mag to read his own interview. This gesture will also demonstrate that you are a thoughtful professional and will endear you to him.
Interviewing skills, like wine, get better with time. So don't break your head too much worrying about it. You may not be some hot-shot journalistic machine, but you did get chosen to do the interview. Be natural and don't try to be someone you are not. Believe in yourself and tackle your subject with full confidence.
