Year-end musings

Saturday, December 29th, 2007
The year is drawing to a close. At times I fall prey to the incontrollable human urge to recall all goodness, however meager; one has been able to spread with one’s deeds throughout the year. Yet, like all mortals, I am given a shake-up of sorts as I think of the charities being organized by the voluntary social service groups all over the world (with special emphasis on the Darfur region). So let’s all join in and offer a prayer of thanksgiving. As you may have noticed, the work suffers from poor editing. Because I go way back with computers and Internet, you will notice that the entries are published in several nuggets to make sure if something crashed, I wouldn’t lose all.I prefer human editors, who will ultimately spell the difference in quality between the filterers (editors) and the users for whom the filtering (editing) is done. The stronger that two-way connection is between editors and users, the better the filter will be. With this connection in mind comes my suggestion that for healthy and word (or almost) perfect transcript, one should be well read. This, in turn, improves our lexical resources that help us overcome the inability to comprehend the exact contents of the audio file.On TV this afternoon, I heard a band of young people who were engaged, participatory, and fired up about events of public and social significance. They engaged in a talk about the Law of the Flow, the Law of the Fast, Law of the Few, and the Law of the Many. Here’s one quote: Bloggers should not be underestimated. They are not just average people. They are people who, long before blogs came along had the ability to surface information and present it to others in a persuasive and compelling way. They are opinion leaders, and weblogs have only served to exponentially increase their reach and their power.”Like others, my clan loves a bit of a self-administered pat-on-the-back too. I ain’t complaining. ;-)
