Year-end musings

Saturday, December 29th, 2007
The year is drawing to a close. At times I fall prey to the incontrollable human urge to recall all goodness, however meager; one has been able to spread with one’s deeds throughout the year. Yet, like all mortals, I am given a shake-up of sorts as I think of the charities being organized by the voluntary social service groups all over the world (with special emphasis on the Darfur region). So let’s all join in and offer a prayer of thanksgiving. As you may have noticed, the work suffers from poor editing. Because I go way back with computers and Internet, you will notice that the entries are published in several nuggets to make sure if something crashed, I wouldn’t lose all.I prefer human editors, who will ultimately spell the difference in quality between the filterers (editors) and the users for whom the filtering (editing) is done. The stronger that two-way connection is between editors and users, the better the filter will be. With this connection in mind comes my suggestion that for healthy and word (or almost) perfect transcript, one should be well read. This, in turn, improves our lexical resources that help us overcome the inability to comprehend the exact contents of the audio file.On TV this afternoon, I heard a band of young people who were engaged, participatory, and fired up about events of public and social significance. They engaged in a talk about the Law of the Flow, the Law of the Fast, Law of the Few, and the Law of the Many. Here’s one quote: Bloggers should not be underestimated. They are not just average people. They are people who, long before blogs came along had the ability to surface information and present it to others in a persuasive and compelling way. They are opinion leaders, and weblogs have only served to exponentially increase their reach and their power.”Like others, my clan loves a bit of a self-administered pat-on-the-back too. I ain’t complaining. ;-)

Data Processing services

Friday, December 28th, 2007
Yesterday saw a tragic event in the form of the sad demise of yet another charismatic political personality. Now that the radio stations have started bringing news for children, it is imperative to make it simpler for them to understand. Lenny’s nuggets will be carrying dashes of medical and non-medical nuggets to keep children updated with the world of translation and transcription. This, I am sure, has significant educational value in every way possible. The adult world of transcription does bring a bit of humor into play, the fun part being convincing the other person that our work is transcription and not selling a doctor’s prescription. :-)In addition to transcription, our company also engages in data processing, wherein data is cleansed, indexed, harvested or mined. This data is then sent back for filing in the most recent user friendly format, either supplied by the client or in the form of our own updated version. Data processing for various fields of operation varies in the method or format used especially when the data has to be retrieved from the archives. Data processing today has been simplified with the advent of cutting edge technology compared to the tedious and often error prone method of re-reading and completing a hand written ledger entry.

From the shoes of the transcriptionist…

Thursday, December 27th, 2007
Hi,This is interesting. This is where I get to share my different cases studies, and people I come in contact with, coming from a population that is very cross cultural and appealing. There have been cases which had to be handled with utmost care so as not to hurt the feeling of inherent patriotism (incited easily by an outsourced transcription service) yet make sure the person from that organization is satisfied with our transcription support service, starting from the first verbal handshake to the last “you guys are AWESOME” with a word “perfect transcript”.My exposure to complicated issues like

· “Regular TAT” turning into “I NEED THAT IN TWO HOURS”.

· Are you sure you sent it to the correct ID??

· I think your offer landed up in my spam trash bin. Now resend to this ID….

· That was pretty fast…

· Pls ignore earlier files. (This message comes after almost completing the transcription)

Medical transcription is another matter where the dictations are short and numerous as well as fast and continuous.

Transcription involves mere conversion from audio to text but the recordings leave us transcriptionists amused to no end.

· The best is from our hard working journos and independents doing a live coverage of events.

· Trauma cases which are society/socially instigated.

· From the doctoral students’ Dissertation/Thesis interviews that us transcriptionist face to face with reality. In fact, I am handling a case at the moment that is very emotionally charged and believe you me that the emotion can be felt in the voice of the interviewer and the interviewee.

But I suppose all this makes transcription a very satisfying job.

Nuggets from the world of medical transcription as I mentioned earlier will be elaborated upon in my next nugget entry as I feel this should suffice as an icebreaker or shall I say “non-verbal hand shake” ;-)

Shall be adding more nuggets to Lenny’s nuggets, and I do invite others to join in and share your audio transcription nuggets with us.

Automated Transcription-The Transcriptionstar way

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

In the field of transcriptioning, which isn’t a very widely covered industry being in the background of all activities and processes, the time has come for the world to sit up and take note of this significant industry with technology advancing at lightening speed and business pouring in enormous capital to have a share of the outsourced transcription industry pie. The services focussing on the automation of the traditional transcription model will succeed in accruing the maximum benefit in the long run.

Here we present an interesting take on the need to automate our document management processes.

Data volumes are growing dramatically. Unlike traditional areas of medical science and astronomy etc. where it was possible for human beings to interpret available data, present times cannot rely on simple human workforce to analyse data. Today the sheer volume of data has made it mandatory to at least partially automate the data analysis process. New tools and methods have to be developed to help human beings from getting lost in the ever multiplying universe of digital data. Moreover, to make any sense of such huge quantities of data, it needs to be made more compact and understandable.

Our services have grabbed this opportunity of automation with both hands. Our transcription system has transcended being a mere service point for transcripts. We now offer fully automated physician dictation management solutions. A doctor no longer needs to record his dictations and then fret over uploading of recordings, worry about when transcripts will be available and download the same when they are available. Once the doctor dictates, he/she simply has to plug the dictation device to the computer. The dictations will be automatically uploaded to our server. From then on, the doctor can check the status of the transcripts. What more, the transcripts will be automatically downloaded to a pre-defined folder in the doctor’s system after the work has been completed. Click here to know more about the process.
